The name´s Durchreiseberichte (Transit reports) and is a purely personal blog without any ethnological allures. I thought I´d have to be consequent and honest to myself this time and just concentrate on personal writing. Have fun.

PROTEST.TWODAY.NET

All the media wrote about it: Munich has been ranked among the elite universities in Germany. The sad fact is: reality is much different. 250€ is the astronomical sum that our lecturers get for a full semester of full work, additional costs, such as working material is not being provided. Demands for amelioration made through official channels cause shrugs and indifference by higher authorities - The fact that they provide the biggest part of academical teaching at the institutes is being widely ignored.

Our education is suffering under this situation! We - the anthropology students of Munich - have created a protest blog to rise our voice against the insupportable circumstances at our "elite" university. We don´t want to watch any longer how education is made a joke of in Munich!

On our blog we´ll publish latest news on our fight for quality education and humane treatment of the staff at our university. We the students are supporting the largely underpaid academical staff at our institute and others, the staff that provides us with education out of passion for the subject and we are asking for your support to strengthen our voice.

thanks for 2005, hello 2006

That was quick. It´s already 2006.

When I got inspired by zeph´s blog and started the weblog sometimes in July (or June?) 05, I didn´t know what I was doing. Now, everytime I look at my referrerstats and my nice clustrmap there on the right hands side I´m getting this odd feeling.. Anyway, I´m glad the thing turned out to be what it is and I´m glad some average 15 readers a day are visiting my weblog. That´s not astronomical, but hey, way more than I ever expected!

Thanks to everybody for being interested in my stuff and everybody who´s promoting - willingly or not - my site. Although it´s rarely about the _big_ issues of anthropology, and lately more often than not about direct anthropology matters at all. But I believe that once you got into the subject, you practically see everything through a filter and I don´t think my posts are too far away from it anyway. Anthropology is perceptional training, we had that once. Take some sense for interpretation and the world´s full of Anthropology. Isn´t it wonderful?

I hope things continue like this. It´s spurring my motivation on a very big scale. I just feel that I´m neglecting my weblog a little bit lately, since I´m violently busy finishing our institute´s newspaper (Which will be in print very soon, btw) with our team and working like a mobster for the upcoming football exhibition in the City Museum. I´ve learned that I just _love_ to be an editor and do phone calls and write e-mails all day long ;-)
Well, the weblog´s not the only thing I´m neglecting. It seems to me that I´m currently studying in my leisure time only. And I´d like to have some time to read my books, but I´ll have to wait for the next flu. ;-) But the best men and women had it that way.

Enough words now. All the best again for 2006, may it be like the best of 2005.

Reflection on time as norm after having spent a weekend in a tipi.

First of all: Happy new year to everyone whose New Year celebration took place on the 31st. We packed our stuff and went to a husky farm in a remote forest in Austria to celebrate this year. All of us seventeen slept in Lakota-style Tipis. They are great constructions - We had -20 centigrades at night, the logfire kept us warm. Unfortunately the weather was not as nice as on the photo taken from the farm´s website - Imagine the same scene with thick fog and the double amount of snow. We had plenty of time sitting together drinking tea and sharing the warmth. And dodging the ice avalanches that fell down occasionally from the wooden poles through the smoke hole. Into our shoes that we set up to dry. ;-)

We came back tonight after two days, but it seems like we´ve been up there for ages. Time completely lost its referential function, the intensity of sunlight took its place. This I´m missing already.

Rarely I felt this phenomenon so directly as now. I find the the consequences of a social rule as the rule of time fascinating. From this "timeless" point of view I had this weekend the angst of coming 5 minutes to late somewhere is completely neurotical. The institutionalisation of time as a norm is probably the invention that brought along the biggest consequences for mankind. This is an interesting point for further investigation - Some years ago I heard a radio interview with a historian that lectures at the TU in Dresden I think. He´s interested in the changes western societies went through after the invention of the clock as a universal norm. I forgot his name, unfortunately.

Doing that I´ve come across another great idea of the Mark Shuttleworth Posse: The Freedom Toaster. Bring along your own blank CD-R and burn open source software right on the spot. The intention of this project is to provide people in South Africa who don´t have an internet access with free quality software that enables them to work properly with their computers.

As they say themselves: "It encapsulates the philosophy of Open Source Software, that we have the freedom to choose which software we use, that we have the freedom to change it if we like and that we have the freedom to share it with anyone, for free. Listen closely....and you'll hear violins playing in the background"
kubuntu made my day

After weeks and months of violent frustration trying to run my soundcard/ethernet device with suse and opensuse on my cheap laptop I gave up my suse-affinity. My friend pietzler has been using kubuntu for a while and I gave it a try. I set it up and everything works from the beginning on. phew.

The ubuntu project is in my eyes the perfect solution for those who don´t want to make linux their only hobby and get their system running with some minimal tweaking after the installation - At least with my hardware. ;-)
